In March 2026, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a state-run defence electronics company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bellatrix Aerospace Private Limited, a space technology startup, to design, develop, manufacture satellite systems and payloads for Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) operations.
- The MoU was exchanged between Rashmi Kathuria, General Manager(GM) of BEL, and Rohan M. Ganapathy, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Bellatrix Aerospace.
Key Outcomes of the Partnership:
Scope: Under the MoU, the two organisations will develop integrated satellite solutions capable of supporting strategic defence and civilian space missions.
Significance: The collaboration reflects India’s growing approach of combining public sector manufacturing capabilities with deep-tech startup innovation.
About VLEO: It refers to orbital altitudes between 150 kilometres (km) and 450 km above Earth, enabling higher-resolution imaging, lower communication latency, and reduced launch costs, but requiring advanced propulsion systems to counter atmospheric drag.
