GoI sets up 17-member committee for larger reforms in SEZ policy
In March 2026, the Government of India (GoI) constituted a 17-member committee to suggest larger reforms in the policy for Special Economic Zones (SEZs), as policymakers seek to revive exports amid global trade uncertainty.
About 17-member committee:
Composition: The committee consists of representatives from Commerce and customs department, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC), Directorate General of Export Promotion (DGEP), export promotion council for SEZs, two development commissioners, and Department of Economic Affairs (DoEA).
Timeline: The committee will submit a concept paper within six months along with its recommendations for broad-based and comprehensive reforms to formulate a SEZ 2.0 policy.
Study: For this purpose, the panel will undertake a background study to review the integration of existing export promotion schemes with SEZs.
