NewsClick and its founder Prabir Purkayastha have been ordered to pay a total penalty of ₹184 crore by an adjudicating authority under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), ED stated. In 2023, Prabir was arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act amid allegations the organisation received funds from China. The violations were "substantial, deliberate, and systemic in nature," it added.
