About José Antonio Kast Rist:
Political Career: Kast began his career as a Buin councilman in 1996, served for over a decade as a congressman with the centre-right Independent Democratic Union (UDI), founded the hard-line Republican Party in 2019, and won the presidency in his third bid after unsuccessful runs in 2017 and 2021.
Ideology & Social Views: A far-right conservative with strong Catholic values, Kast admires former dictator Augusto Pinochet and firmly opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and euthanasia.
Security Agenda: His “mano dura” or Implacable Plan prioritizes strict law enforcement through expanded police and military powers, deployment of troops in high-crime areas, isolation of cartel leaders, and construction of high-security prisons.
Migration Policy: Kast supports mass deportations of undocumented migrants, building border barriers in northern Chile, and creating a specialized border force modeled on the United States of America (USA) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
