- The day was officially recognised after the Global Leopard Conference in 2023, the first international gathering on leopard conservation.
About Leopards:
Taxonomy: Leopards (Panthera pardus) belong to the genus Panthera, which also includes lions, tigers, jaguars, and snow leopards, and are distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, northeast Africa, Central Asia, India, and China.
Traits: They have unique rosette-patterned coats and are predominantly nocturnal hunters.
Status: Listed as “Vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List under criteria A2cd due to population decline.
