MoD Signs Contracts Worth Rs. 858 Crore to Strengthen Defence Capabilities of IA and INIn March 2026, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed two contracts worth Rs. 858 crores with Russia and the United States of America (USA) based companies to procure advanced air defence systems for the Indian Army (IA) and maintain maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the Indian Navy (IN), strengthening India’s military capabilities and reinforcing defence ties.Key Detail of Contracts:Tunguska Air Defence Missile System: A Rs.445 crore contract by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with JSC Rosoboronexport, Russia, enables acquisition of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems to strengthen capabilities.P-8I Aircraft Maintenance: A Rs.413 crore contract by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with Boeing India Defense Private Limited (BDI), USA, covers Depot-Level Inspection (DLI) of P-8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft.Defence Proposals: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for various defence procurement proposals worth approximately Rs 2.38 lakh crore, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the IA, Indian Air Force (IAF), and Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

India’s First Hydrogen Train Completes Successful Oscillation TrialsIn March 2026,  Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Railways (MoR) announced the successful completion of the oscillation trials for India’s first hydrogen-powered trainset.Key Details of Test Trial:Conducted by:  The test was conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) as part of the evaluation process.Route:  As per MoR, India’s first hydrogen-powered train will run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana.Manufacturer: The train is developed by Chennai(Tamil Nadu, TN)-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).Key Accomplishments: During the oscillation trial, the hydrogen train covered a total distance of 20 kilometres  (kms) with a maximum speed of 70 km per hour (kmph) on the railway track.

IOC Announces New Policy on Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic SportIn March 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board approved a landmark policy titled ‘Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic Sport,’ replacing the 2021 framework without retroactive application and set to take effect from the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games which is scheduled to be held in July 14-30, 2028 in the United States of America (USA).The policy aims to uphold fairness, safety, and integrity by protecting the rights of female athletes and ensuring equal competition based on scientific evidence.About IOC Female Eligibility Policy:Criteria: Sex-determining Region Y Gene Screening (SRY) requires athletes to be SRY-negative to compete in female categories, citing biological advantages in strength, power, and endurance.Ineligibility: SRY-positive athletes, including XY transgender individuals and those with androgen-sensitive Differences/Disorders of Sex Development (DSD), are ineligible for female events but may compete in other categories, with exceptions for Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) and certain DSD cases without testosterone advantage.Implementation: The policy applies to all IOC events, including the Olympic Games, Youth Olympics, and qualifiers, and is implemented by National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs) under joint oversight.

GoI Kept Inflation Target at 4% for 2026-31 PeriodIn March 2026, the Government of India (GoI) kept the inflation target unchanged i.e. 4% for the next 5 years (from April 01, 2026 to March 31, 2031), ,marking the 2nd consecutive instance of  inflation targets unchanged.As per the official notification issued by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance (MoF), the decision was taken by the MoF in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in exercise of powers given by Section 45ZA of RBI Act, 1934 (2 of 1934).Key Details:Upper and Lower Limit: The notification has clarified that upper tolerance level of inflation at 6% and lower tolerance level at 2% for the same time period (i.e. from April 2026 to March 2031).Inflation Target Framework: The inflation target is set under India’s Flexible Inflation Targeting (FIT) framework, introduced in 2016. This framework mandates the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to maintain inflation at a specified level, with a tolerance band.
